Smart phones eat into PDA sales
Clearly, the convergence of industry sectors provides a lot stories regarding the rise and fall of products.
We wrote a couple of times about the impact that camera phones have on "normal" digitial cameras. This has let companies to close plants or to struggle in their aim to remain relevant in today's world.
What hasn't been mentioned too often is that slowly and quietly, smart phones are starting to replace the "traditional" PDAs.
IDC now provides some numbers stating that "Worldwide shipments of PDAs lacking telephone capabilities declined to 2.1 million units in the third quarter ending September 30, 2004. That's an 8.7 per cent drop compared with the same quarter a year ago and a 4.6 per cent decline from this year's second quarter."
It is difficult to say that this is the end of PDAs as we know them - remember, many converged tools don't work that well or let us struggle with managing the different applications. But may be it is possible to say that Smartphones are the successor to PDAs and that they can only get better.
